Best Spots for Birdwatching in Langkawi

31 May 2019 | Tarmizi Mohamad

Langkawi is home to several islands featuring great beaches and several fun-filled activities to keep guest entertained all through their stay. Due to the mild yet constant temperature, Langkawi is also popular as a destination for birding. If you are a fan of bird watching, then you should probably expect an average temperature of 32°C for the most part of the year. Over 200 species of birds can be seen lurking in Langkawi. Some of these birds are migratory, while others are native to the island.

There are several birding tour companies whose local guides know where to find some of the rare and interesting bird species. Most offer half or full-day private tours for individuals or small groups, as well as pre-organized outings, while others offer full vacation packages. Darulaman Sanctuary is one of the companies that offer birdwatching experiences.

Darulaman Sanctuary, 226 acres of rainforest is perfect for trekking and birdwatching. Langkawi is also well known with its wildlife and home to over 200 bird species, of which Darulaman has already spotted 78 since opening in May 2018.

Have you ever heard of Africa’s Big Five? Langkawi is unique with Flying Five: the flying lemur, flying squirrel, flying lizard, flying fox, and flying snake.

Mohd Ros Effendi, or better known as Fendi, is Darulaman Sanctuary’s lead guide, with a special love for birds and spiders.

Birdwatching activity starts at the foot of Langkawi’s highest point (Gunung Raya), the 200 acres forest reserve in recent times closing off to vehicles after families on picnics not only caused pollution but chased away wildlife too. The hilly area is thriving once more, with Darulaman offering 10 treks catering to all levels of interest, hiking capabilities, and even team building packages.
